One Secret to a Happy Homestead: Turkeys and Their Bounty

Embarking on a homesteading journey involves selecting the right companions for your piece of paradise. Turkeys, often underrated, bring a plethora of benefits to the homestead table. I must say, I accidentally stumbled upon them, and I am so glad that I did!!! Let's explore why and how these majestic birds can become an integral part of your homesteading adventure.

1. Natural Pest Control

Why Turkeys?

  • Turkeys are voracious foragers with a keen eye for insects, pests, and weeds.

  • Their diverse diet includes ticks, grasshoppers, and small rodents, making them excellent contributors to natural pest control.

How to Leverage:

  • Allow your turkeys to roam freely in your garden or orchard.

  • Rotate them between different areas to target pests effectively.

Turkeys are exceptional foragers with a natural inclination for hunting insects and pests. Their keen eyesight and inquisitive nature make them efficient bug hunters. A few years ago the Joro Spider was introduced into our area. I couldn't even walk out onto my porch without walking into one! Since having turkeys, we have had no further problems with them, which is absolutely amazing! Turkeys love to scratch and peck, targeting a wide range of pests, including grasshoppers, ticks, spiders, and small rodents. By allowing turkeys to roam freely in your garden or orchard, you create a dynamic and sustainable pest control system. Consider rotating them between different areas to maximize their impact. Not only do turkeys contribute to pest control, but they also minimize the need for chemical interventions, promoting a healthier and more balanced ecosystem on your homestead.

2. Nutrient-Rich Manure for Soil Fertility

Why Turkeys?

  • Turkey manure is an excellent source of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

  • It enriches the soil, promoting healthy plant growth and increased crop yields.

How to Leverage:

  • Integrate turkeys into your rotational grazing system for pastures.

  • Use turkey litter as compost or allow them access to specific areas in need of fertilization. We personally use this method. When cleaning our coop we compost all of our manure for future use in our raised garden beds! It has also made for some excellent green grass!

The manure produced by turkeys is a valuable asset for enhancing soil fertility. Rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, turkey droppings contribute essential nutrients that promote robust plant growth. Integrating turkeys into a rotational grazing system for pastures ensures an even distribution of their nutrient-rich manure. This natural fertilization method is not only sustainable but also minimizes the reliance on synthetic fertilizers. By strategically managing where your turkeys roam, you can tailor their impact to areas that require specific soil enrichment, creating a thriving environment for your crops and vegetation. While we are are working on a smaller scale, our guys have contributed tremendously in sustaining our pest population and providing us with great soil!

3. Sustainable Meat Source

Why Turkeys?

  • Turkeys provide a lean, nutritious meat source that can feed your family.

  • Raising your own turkeys ensures you have control over their diet and living conditions.

How to Leverage:

  • Choose heritage breeds known for flavor and hardiness.

  • Implement humane and ethical practices for processing when the time comes.

Here at Feathered Hill, we do not raise our turkeys for meat sources. However if you choose, raising turkeys on your homestead provides a sustainable and ethically sourced meat option. Not only do turkeys offer a lean and nutritious meat source for your family, but you also have control over their diet and living conditions. Opting for heritage breeds known for their flavorful meat and hardiness ensures a quality protein source. When the time comes for processing, implementing humane and ethical practices respects the life of the turkeys while yielding a harvest that supports your homestead's self-sufficiency goals. The turkeys here on the Hill will live long happy lives. We thoroughly love and enjoy them ! We appreciate all that they contribute to the homestead!

4. Feathered Watchdogs

Why Turkeys?

  • Turkeys are vigilant and have keen senses, making them excellent watchdogs.

  • Their alert nature can help deter potential predators from your homestead.

How to Leverage:

  • Integrate turkeys into your free-range poultry setup.

  • Allow them to range close to other vulnerable animals or garden areas.

It is true! Turkeys really are like watchdogs! Our turkeys literally bark when someone pulls into our driveway! I love having them, as it is a peace of mind knowing someone is patrolling the yard. Turkeys, with their alert nature and keen senses, serve as natural watchdogs for your homestead. Their vigilance can help deter potential predators, alerting you to any unusual activity or threats. Integrating turkeys into a free-range poultry setup, where they have the freedom to roam and explore, positions them strategically to provide an additional layer of protection. The vocalizations and behavior of turkeys can signal the presence of predators, giving you the opportunity to address and mitigate potential risks before they escalate. When our feathered babies (aka our turkeys) are free ranging with the chickens, I feel so much better knowing that they are there. They are like a faithful watchdog that never leaves your side! (literally)

5. Self-Sustaining Breeding Potential

Why Turkeys?

  • Heritage Turkeys are capable of natural breeding, reducing the need for continual replacement.

  • A self-sustaining flock can provide a steady supply of young turkeys.

How to Leverage:

  • Choose breeds known for broodiness and maternal instincts.

  • Allow hens to hatch and raise their poults for a self-sustaining turkey population.

One of the unique advantages of heritage turkeys is their potential for self-sustaining breeding. By choosing breeds known for broodiness and maternal instincts, you can allow hens to hatch and raise their poults. This creates a self-sustaining population on your homestead, reducing the need for continual replacement. With careful management and attention to the natural breeding behaviors of turkeys, you can establish a resilient and self-renewing turkey flock that contributes to the overall sustainability of your homestead.

Incorporating turkeys into your homestead is a multi-faceted strategy that brings about a harmonious blend of natural pest control, soil fertility, sustainable meat, vigilant guardianship, and the potential for self-sustaining flocks. These majestic birds contribute to the balance of your ecosystem, ensuring a more resilient and vibrant homestead.

Ready to Add Turkeys to Your Homestead?

Here's What to Know:

Housing:

  • Provide a secure turkey coop or shelter with adequate ventilation.

  • Ensure sufficient space for turkeys to move around and roost comfortably. Mine prefer to roost up high.

  • Implement sturdy fencing to protect turkeys from predators.

Nutrition:

  • Offer a balanced turkey feed that meets their nutritional requirements.

  • Provide access to clean and fresh water at all times.

  • Consider supplementing their diet with greens, grains, and kitchen scraps. My babies absolutely love oatmeal, blueberries and scrambled eggs!

Health Care:

  • Monitor turkeys for signs of illness and address any health issues promptly.

  • Implement a vaccination and deworming schedule as recommended by a poultry veterinarian.

  • Maintain a clean living environment to prevent the spread of diseases. One product that we use that works wonders is First Saturday Lime. It works great for preventing pest control, odor, and moisture reduction.

Social Interaction:

  • Turkeys are social animals, so keep them in groups to prevent loneliness.

  • Provide enriching activities and spaces for turkeys to explore.

  • Avoid overcrowding to minimize stress and aggression within the flock.

Breeding Management:

  • If planning for natural breeding, provide nesting boxes for hens.

  • Allow hens to incubate and hatch eggs naturally or consider artificial incubation.

  • Separate broody hens with poults from the rest of the flock for their protection.

Seasonal Considerations:

  • Provide additional heat during colder months to prevent cold stress.

  • Ensure adequate shade and ventilation during hot weather.

  • Adjust feeding schedules based on the changing nutritional needs of turkeys.

By addressing the housing, nutrition, health care, social interaction, breeding management, and seasonal considerations for turkeys, you can create a thriving and contented flock that contributes to the overall success of your homestead.
