Elevated Benefits: Why Choose Raised Beds?

Raised bed gardening comes with a host of advantages. The improved soil quality is a standout feature, as gardeners have precise control over the composition of the soil. Here on the Hill, we are currently shoveling our dirt into place! We have been composting for months, and are now ready for the topsoil! We will be filling in our beds, along with adding the proper nutrition to the soil along the way. The heightened structure also facilitates better drainage, preventing waterlogging and ensuring optimal root health. Raised beds offer better pest control, and their elevated position makes them more accessible, reducing strain on the gardener's back. Additionally, the defined boundaries of raised beds deter soil compaction, leading to healthier plant growth.

Cons of Raised Bed Gardening

Navigating Challenges: The Flip Side of Raised Beds

While raised beds are celebrated for their benefits, it's essential to address potential challenges. The initial investment can be higher compared to traditional gardening methods, especially when using durable materials like cedar for construction. Although cedar is a great option, we chose to hand build our garden beds out of treated lumber and tin. This helped us in saving on the upfront cost! We have been collecting cardboard boxes, sticks, leaves and other biodegradable debris to also help combat the cost of dirt. Limited space within the raised bed may pose challenges for crops with extensive root systems or those requiring significant space. This is true and we are very aware of that! We have chosen to grow the crops that our family eats the most. These crops typically don't have the extensive root systems that others do! Careful planning, financial consideration, and thoughtful crop selection are essential to mitigate these challenges.

What Can You Grow in Raised Beds?

Limitless Possibilities: Choosing Your Crops

The versatility of raised beds opens the door to a cornucopia of crops. Shallow-rooted vegetables like lettuce, radishes, and herbs thrive in the limited depth of raised beds. However, with careful planning, deeper-rooted crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and carrots can also flourish. The controlled environment of raised beds allows for strategic planting and optimal use of space, making them ideal for a diverse and thriving vegetable garden. We are so excited to grow potatoes, carrots and onions this year! In past years, we have really struggled with these crops, due to our red clay. This will be such an adventure!
